ACCOSTING POSTERS
STOP STARING AT ME!

»In a world of varied forms of media and visual communication, posters are still the most popular form of advertising — posters are neither distracting nor annoying. Their popularity is affirmed by more than 60% of the respondents to the “Communication Barometer” of the IMAS-institute (a regular report of a german marketing research company).

Posters are well received by the public and are constantly reaching larger parts of the population. The poster is a form of advertisement, and also an important component of the urban landscape.«

Today, posters are an unquestioned and well-integrated part of our everyday life. The aim of our project was to increase awareness about the unquestioned and hidden mechanisms of advertising.

As part of a media-saturated society, people often become desensitized to the media itself. The poster is read as if it was not there at all. Hardly anybody sees the printed piece of paper which was put there by a company to promote a certain aim and to represent their interests.

By printing various ‘tongue-in-cheek’ slogans on advertisements, such as, “Go ahead, ignore me”, “Stop staring at me,” and “I certainly did not put myself up here” we tried to simultaneously reinterpret and unmask manipulative advertising mechanisms.
